In hair transplant surgery, hair is removed from an area at the back of the head known as the donor zone. Hair in the donor zone is not affected by dehydrotestosterone (DHT), the androgen that is responsible for pattern hair loss in men and women. In follicular unit transplants – the most effective method of hair restoration, a strip containing DHT resistance hairs is removed from the back of the head and families of hairs (grafts) are dissected out of the strip as they naturally occur, in one to four hair bundles.
